Thomas attended Hampden-Sydney College, where he received his B.A. cum laude (political science) and successfully completed the James Madison Public Service Certificate at the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest.  After working for a year at Rik Lovett & Associates, Thomas went on to attend Campbell University School of Law, graduating cum laude in 2010.  While in law school, Thomas was a member of the Student Court all three years (and Chief Justice his third year) and active in Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity chapter, serving as its head during his third year of law school.  Also during law school, Thomas held internships at the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
Thomas received the Outstanding Family Law Student Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 2010.  Thomas was included in Business North Carolina’s 2017 and 2023 Legal Elite in the area of Family Law.  Thomas also served for several years as Co-Editor of the North Carolina Bar Association’s family law newsletter and has revised a chapter of the North Carolina Family Law Marital Claims Deskbook (5th edition).
Thomas was certified by the N.C. State Bar Board of Legal Specialization in 2018 as a Board Certified Family Law Specialist.
